German brand unveils five-door Sportback version of its luxury city car.

Audi has unveiled a more practical five-door version of its luxury city car, the A1.

The new A1 Sportback, which is based on Volkswagen's diminutive Polo, measures an identical 3.95 metres in length as the three-door model but is slightly wider and features a higher roofline to liberate more rear-seat space.

According to Audi the five-door base-model 1.2-litre version weighs just 25 kilograms more than the three-door at 1065kg.

Unlike the three-door, the Sportback will be available with a three-seat rear bench - rather than two individual bucket seats - at no extra cost. Boot space for the five-door remains identical at 270 litres (920L with the seats folded).

The A1 Sportback is due to arrive in Australia mid-2012, and the new model is expected to be initially offered with a choice of 90kW 1.4-litre turbo and 136kW turbo and supercharged petrol engines.

The brand's recently introduced 1.6-litre turbo diesel is also likely to be offered, but it's not confirmed as yet. Audi has not said whether it will offer the cheaper 1.2-litre base-model to keep prices down.

The current three-door A1 range starts at $32,250 plus costs, and while Audi has not officially revealed how much the five-door will sell for, sources have told Drive that it will likely add a premium of about $2500 to $3000 over the three-door model.

Further details on the A1 Sportback will be released closer to launch.

Interior on the upmarket versions looks great!

Still a bit pricey however.
