NRMA pushes for road safety funding boost

The New South Wales Government is being lobbied to use the money it raises from speed cameras to fund other road safety measures.

The NRMA is trying to gather 10,000 signatures to have the proposal debated in State Parliament.

NRMA President Wendy Machin says speed cameras raise more than $140 million each year.

"We believe that if you're going to put cameras in there and tell motorists it's about improving safety then it's a fair cop to take that money and put it back into road safety programs," Ms Machin said.

"In essence it's about the government putting their money where their mouth is."

The Police Association of NSW is backing the push.

Association President Scott Weber says putting more police on the road should be a priority.

"At the moment the money just goes into this eternal and alleged black hole. What we need to do is make sure that speed camera funds go back to where they're needed," Mr Weber said.

"That is building up our roads, making sure there's more highway patrol officers out there actually preventing road trauma and on top of that making sure there's further education."
