Personally I would be looking at Morayfield area. Its midway to the Sunshine coast or Brisbane and if you have the urge to go to the Gold coast it isnt really that bad of a drive.

Only bad thing about the north side is buses. You can get a bus from Brisbane north but you will only get as far as Strathpine. On the south side the buses are much easier to get but they do seem to take forever to get anywhere.
Morayfield is a fair hike to Brisbane, plus its bit of a ***** hole at times! Logan city is much nicer, the likes of Daisy Hill, Springwood and Rochedale are all nice areas (around 20 km to city), plus you have buses close by!

Crazy really. I don't know why you people love spending 2 hours a day or 10 hours a week traveling.. Id rather be at home drinking a few cold ones!
