Now I'm not wanting to start a speeding is safe, safer, safest under certain conditions and I will agree that there is probably good speed and bad speed but......

If you are on a "deserted country road" doing whatever speed then it's not deserted at all, if you are on said road chances are someone else is also on said road, what if they cut a corner just a little too much, hit a rough surface (pothole etc), swerved just a little to avoid an animal- dead or alive as country roads have a few of them, while your coming the other way?

How many single vehicle accidents occur on "deserted roads" involving death and/or serious injury? I'll bet the persons driving thought what they were doing was "safe" too

Are other people not entitled to share the roads in a reasonably safe manner?

What is "safe, safer or safest speeding if such a thing exists 10mover the limit, or if I drive a really safe driver with a car with abs, traction control,'air bags, automated anti death devices etc etc and I've driven safely for 20 plus years is doing 280km/h safe? Who's to say? What qualifies them to say?

Arghh - stop making up new media darling laws every other day and start enforcing the laws / road rules that we've already got.

I would wager that the drivers on the Capricorn Highway between, say, Emerald and Rockhampton, would appear to be well above average as far as highway driving is concerned.
I'll sit the cruise control on 112 (GPS checked) in the 110 zone to head down to Rocky, and I'll be overtaken constantly by cars and four wheel drives. Same happens to me in the Celica, same when I'm on the motorbike. People just seem to be in a massive hurry out here, especially mine vehicles.
Yet the highway isn't littered with the wrecks of past incidents. In fact, the only real incidents out here are cars running off the road in a corner when the driver has fallen asleep...fatigue is the real danger out here, not speed as such.
In fact, you can notice is in the road safety signs...as soon as you turn off the main highway at Rocky and onto the Capricorn Highway to head inland towards Longreach, you start seeing signs saying "Fatigue: the number one highway killer", and "Is your driver alert?", and stuff like that, and none of the "speed kills" stuff you see on Highway One. It struck us as odd when we first moved out here.

It could be to do with the sheer amount of highway driving people experience out here...for us to simply go to the supermarket means jumping in the car and hitting the highway for the 20km drive to Blackwater...a trip to Emerald is nearly 100km away, Rocky is 170km in the other direction towards the coast, and after over three years living out here, the 170km trip to Rocky just seems like "no big thing"...something you suddenly decide to do, to "nip into Rocky and go to the shops there". . Our son got his licence and I reckon he easily logged more highway time in his first three months of driving than our other two kids back in Bundaberg did in thier first three years of driving. People seem to get used to the speed and highway driving.

Compared, I suppose, to people in cities during holiday periods, when they might not drive on the highway for long distances more than three or four times a year, and all suddenly hit the road at once.

I've always thought it's a good idea to hammer people driving like obvious idiots, especially in crowded town areas, but to simply lump everyone in with a tight little label of "hooning" is a bit silly and doesn't adress the real issues.
10kph over the limit on a major arterial road in the city? No big deal, maybe a caution...but 10kph over the limit in a school zone at 3.30pm with unpredictable kids everywhere, and your **** should quite rightly be grass.

Of course, the authorities aren't going to make fine distinctions...far easier to just slap a broad blanket label on things and say "don't speed", or "don't be a hoon", than to adress the actual issues and base their response on the individual situation they are dealing with at the moment, like police used to do in the old days not that long ago.
exactly. sometimes laws applicable to cities just don't work out here in the sticks.
if you're doing 112 after Westwood, then i'll be one going past you. i always do 118 and have never been booked on the Capricorn.
i take it you'd be in Bluff?

Got it in one! Little blink-and-you'll-miss-it place right on the highway. We don't even have a police station here.

Yep, we usually drift above the posted speed from time to time, and unless the cops around Blackwater are on a crack down as they do now and then, from there all the way out to Winton usually all you'll get (unless you're doing something stupid) is a wave or a pointed finger telling you to back off a bit.

A DETECTIVE had his unregistered car impounded for 30 days after being caught hooning in Mornington on the weekend.

The 42-year-old off-duty policeman from the eastern region was pulled over by police on Main St about 11pm on Saturday.

A police spokeswoman said he was interviewed and is likely to be charged on summons with failing to have proper control of his vehicle and driving an unregistered car.

His car was impounded for 30 days under the hoon legislation.
He is likely to face an internal disciplinary hearing over the matter.
Lol.

personally what annoys me about hoon laws is law makers spend so much time and effort on them, and have they have no qualms about making the penalty's quite severe, yet robbers/rapists/murderers/drugys/etc that have zero qaulms about doing you or your family grievous bodily harm for a wallet or a cigarette or just for the hell of it............... get ****weak penalty's when you size up the penalty for crime committed.
our laws seem upside down.

Too true. After hearing about the woman who had her throat slashed by a scumbag who stole her handbag, this rings too true.

So, in reality - you get a lighter punishment for murder than for speeding or tax evasion. Cool country this Australia.

Had fun the other day.
Did about five burnouts, and slid my car sideays around some corners.
Even got up to 135kmh without being booked.
Oh yeah, i was on a race track.

Not socially acceptable is the word for certain. For a democratic country it sure seems as is we are heading to socialist society more an more every day.
What will the bureaucrats and think tanks come up with next. Will they fit every car in the country with a gps, so you can receive an instant fine every time the speed limit is breached.
This "nanny state" of a country is getting out of control.
