On the other hand there are some who make fools of themselves when due to their ignorance of Ford history are unaware that there were many boutique tuning houses in the '80s and the Phase 5 was made by one of them called Phase Autos, I think.

Maybe a bit of research before posting will prevent that in the future.....

If it's genuine, it is in fairly good nick by the looks of it. Bugger all were made and they covered XD and XE models. 225kw.

PS. Flappist is correct in that Phase Autos built them. Nothing to do with what we all know as Phase 1,2,3 and 4, but a prototype in the similar vein as DJR etc I suppose.

Mate of mine had a phase 5 with all the genuine papers and stuff, very tuff car. I think they were made and sold to the public because of Group C racing back then, they had to sell them to the public to be raced? Can someone confirm that as true or did i hear wrong.

LOL, I agree. The XD holds special to me because my father always had Holden's and when I was about 12 he bought the new XD in Monza Red. Been a Ford man ever since. I think they got away with the "phase 5" name only due to the fact the company that produced them was Phase Auto. I'm too young to remember, but I bet the purists had a bit to say back then.

Phase 5 had nothing to do with Ford or any relation close too. Not even like a Tickford set up. Phase 5 was a name only, as mentioned earlier, by Phase Autos that put on extra bits and pieces. Bit like Herrod built cars or C2R putting body kits on AU's and calling them, well, C2R's I suppose. Genuine papers and so forth would only be written out by the company that produced it, and not by Ford, and at this stage are pretty much worthless as far as collectability goes. An ESP should be worth 5 times more. As far as I know the wording Phase....whatever has never been registered.

BUT in saying that it doesnt look too bad...for the money if all in good nic......except the colour but some love green.

well geez......nice car....but since it wasn't made in a ford factory like the XW, XY, XA.....it looks like an xd with a heap of crap stuck on it.....homologated options is something i think of when i see that

Yeh i know ford didnt put them together, but it is just a bit different than your average xd with factory recaro interior, simmons wheels, body kit, i think koni suspension ( not sure ) tramp rods, holley carby, extractors and other stuff that i cant think of atm. The car was sold for $18,000. ESP worth 5 times more?

If your mate sold it for 18K, good luck to him! The person who bought it should have invested in an ESP instead of throwing money into one of those. This ones advertised for 7K. Correct. That car in the add though dosnt look like a Phase 5 to me though. It wasnt a Ford product, but I remeber a white one in the foyer of Hoytes Cinema, George St Sydney for the promotion of the James Bond film Moonraker. Had a alloy grill and a wild body kit.

I agree, but different people like different things, i never liked the phase 5 much until i went for a drive in it and kept seeing it in the garage. It was pretty original and being 1 of 20 made, $18k must of sounded good to the guy who bought it. I think the XE ESP kicks its ***, no contest.

As has been mentioned they were biult by phase auto's but the one for sale does not look right.

Wrong colour for a start,also they came with a slightly worked over 351 with the normal thremoquad carby and air cleaner.

Also they had fins on the front grauds.

The road test in Motor August 1981 states that the car only had 160kw, so was pretty much stock with a body kit and suspension upgrade. Packages started at about $2000 up to $9000 so I guess there were engine mods if you wanted them.

It was the 80's and the wowsers were in full force, from what i remember they were trying to do something like the HDT's in that the actual manufacturer couldn't be seen to be building this sort of thing but an aftermarket could.

They were available through a dealer network just as the HDT product, the paperwork was kept seperate to the FOMOCO paperwork to not be an 'official' Ford product but was pretty well sanctioned by Ford. Also yes from what I recall Phase Auto did the homologation work for the race cars, as well as the Moffat EB and I think some EF/EL stuff as well.

So as for price, and I know alot of guys wouldn't want to hear this, but they will become more colectible, although this one is obviously not genuine in that the color has been changed. A wise collector with the room to store it might think seriously about putting one of these in his shed, they are still cheap at the moment but will out do the ESP before long if only because of there low build numbers.

We all know the way it goes, never knew what you had until the right buyer came along that appreciated it, the XA and XB GTs were in the same boat not so long ago, same with the XT. As something becomes rarer the next closest thing becomes the way to move, need i mention how abundant and cheap coupes were in the 80's they had so little value to most that original GT coupes were being modified to some extreme lengths.

Appears I am confusing the P5 with the Moonraker. I remember both now. As the other guy said, 80s was wowserville. If you wanted a performance Ford you had to dive an older car. I did like the XD ESP 5.8 but as muscle car it had had its nuts chopped off.

Phase 1, 2, 3 and 4 were all derivatives of Falcon GT's. Was there an XD GT? NO.

Many considered and many more still have come to consider the ESP as the GT of the XD/E era, after all GT=Grand Tourer and that's what the ESP essantially was/is, therefore making this, unofficially of course as ford could never fully back it, a Phase car.

HDT, I think it was in the VH, had a special that pushed out over 250kw but never pushed the advertising, I only know because if you look closely in some of the old car mags from the time in the pricing section at the back, you will find it their in the fine print. Manufacturers simply were not able to advertise these cars in the same way because of restricions imposed on high powered 'factory cars' at the time, but if it came out of a 'reputable tune house' it was ok as it was not a 'factory car' even though it was sold through the dealer network.


EDIT: Something else I only just noticed, but it does not anywhere state that it's a GT or a HO, so I don't really see an issue in calling it what it is, IT IS A PHASE 5.
