Calling all iinet users

The Ringo's are about to take a technology leap and get a new a get a new internet provider to go with a new pc

(NOTE- NEW PC IS NOT UP FOR DISCUSSION ON THIS THREAD !!)

We are currently using telstra for everything including our current dial up connection (......stop laughing)

I am very much leaning towards iinet because:
- we can get ADSL2+ from this ISP at full speed (we are 500 metres from a telstra exchange)
- they offer VOIP which may save us some money and help to offset some costs

So my question for the thread is

1. Do you use iinet ?
2. Did you take their modem?
3. How easy where they to deal with on set up? (I am a novice when it comes to computer tech stuff - service counts!)
4. Are you using VOIP for your main phone line? (with a telsta line as back up?)

And how is it all going....anything I should know?????

happy iinet customer for a number of years here, I didn't take their modem though, but their support line is typically very helpful so I don't think you'll suffer any setup issues.

Don't use VOIP yet though, waiting for adsl2 to be enabled at my exchange before I use that

I have been a IInet user for years as well. took there modem used it as a modem and plugged a Dlink DI624 router with simple firewall protection as my front line of sercuity. Still run a firewall and virus scanner on the PC's.

It all very easy to setup.

I have there phone package for cheap calls but never seem to use it.

1. Yes (ADSL2+) and it's QUICK (connect at around 19-20,000kbps).
2. No - did my research and got the unit that met my needs best (Netcomm NB9W)
3. Reasonably good. Their tech support has improved quite a bit lately.
4. Not yet but going to.

Don't forget to get a proper ADSL2 line filter as well - trying to use an old one may give you a world of hurt and unexplained dropouts.

1. Not anymore - switched to Internode when iinet proposed to cut my ADSL1 speed from 1.5MBit to 512K for the same price. You may be 500 metres from the exchange, but is it equipped with Iinet's ADSL2+ DSLAM?

2. No, my previous ISP had better than retail prices, so I got one off them. It can pay to buy their supported modems (better support from them), but only if it's a good model or at the same or better than retail price. The 2 main brands to consider I think are Billion (good value/quality balance) and Netgear (always at or near the top). I got a Netcomm, which has been OK

3. Easy, there's not much to set up besides your username/password. Download the setup instructions from iinet and then you'll be ready for when the time comes.

4. Don't make many calls so I don't need VOIP. My last phone bill was under $25

I'm also with Internode for my ADSL. I use their VoIP and it saves me a lot of money. I live outside the metro area and all of our calls would normally be STD calls via traditional carriers. With Nodephone, all calls to landlines, anywhere in Australia, is 18c untimed. My last monthly bill, including line rental, was $24. ($19.95 line rental and $4.88 in calls)

If you are thinking of switching to VoIP, get out your last few home phone bills and do a comparison of what you paid with your current provider and what you would have paid with VoIP. This will give you some indication as to whether or not you'll save any/much money.

We have been with IInet for about 3 years, , have own modem

they have been excellent.

I dont care about prices, cause I know its about $60 per month 1.5gb speed with about 20Gb peak and 20Gb off peak, , and it ALWAYS works
