Default AVGAS availability

Just wondering if anyone knows if (and where) AVGAS is available anywhere in the Geelong region? Or near Geelong? I guess that means Melbourne....

If there are any major racing or go carting track/Shops around, they may have some.

You will have to get a leaded fuels passbook, this can be got through andra/cams etc, then you log your use,and then purchase where available, smaller airport usually,we get it through Bankstown airport in Sydney..

There is also an airport between the Breakwater and Barwon Heads. Lake .?.?.. can't rememeber.

You do have a log book and you won't be using the fuel on the roads?

If you have an AOC (aircraft operators certificate) you can buy it in drums. Otherwise it is much harder to get hold of than it once was. This is because the gov taxes it less. Therefore they dont want it used on the road, otherwise they loose revenue. Sound typical. I use it on my datto roadster 50/50 with premium unleaded.

Heres a hint. Go to an aircraft maintenance workshop. They usually have drums of the stuff that they have drained from A/C when maintenance has been done. It is illegal to put avgas back into A/C after it has been drained. The workshop guys might sell you some.... but dont bank on it.

Good luck

Its not too bad yet, still available and cheaper than VP race fuel,
dont know how we'll go in the future though,
it will be fased out eventually, which is a shame for those that use it,
it is a very good fuel, the equal to a 109 race fuel as the lead
is an anti knock in itself..

I used to get mine in 44's from a guy that ran his own chopper business...one day he said to me "I can't sell you anymore cos I can't cover it with my flight logs"...the Govt is checking.

So to all those that can still get it ...goodluck...but look for an alternative.

You are being lied to.

I have NEVER logged fuel purchased anywhere ever and I do get around a bit although it is usually a fairly obvious what I am using it for.

If you do not have an ARN you can always go over to the dark side.
Ultralight loonies never log anything and buy as much as they like. How do you think the waldocks, pathetic haven, sorrensens, bundy forestry, biggenden, childers, rainbow, kia ora and where ever ALA lurkers fuel their motorised hills hoists and rotary billy carts?

Join the AUF and go for your life. Of course this means you will have to mix with "people" (and I use the term loosely) who make VL bogans and e-mutants seem normal.

You are, of course, not using the AVGAS in a road car coz that is naughty.....

I think I'll have to look into that myself. I'm not sure whether this class requires the logbook? Its not actually classified as a racing class.

A little trivia about avgas, people have assumed it is 100 octane, because they have seen BP100 on the tanker's,I am told it is guaranteed to be a minimum of 105.8,but it will work as good as a higher rated unleaded because of the lead...

Hey nugget...I was always led to believe that avgas was guaranteed to be between 100 and 110 ron...so yep your pretty close to the mark with your info.

You will be very lucky to get a hold of real avgas. even if you can buy leaded race fuel. it will be Race Fuel Spec Octain 100 with low lead.

A few reason. The environmental ones ( that i dont agree with) and the govt ones. (the fuel has a lower excise for aviation and they dont want it used in cars.)

I should know because we do historic club racing.

BTW check out:

If you have a logbook should be able to get it through your local BP depot. We can buy Methanol through a local servo here so should be available everywhere else

Its worth about 30c a litre. But you will pay a lot more. I get it from the local LAME guys in 20 litre drums for $1 a litre. That is the second hand stuff taken from aircraft during maintenance. I just love the smell of burnt AVGAS. I reckon after shave made to smell the same would sell like hot cakes.... :

$2/litre is still cheaper and less hassle than replacing a blown head gasket from the inconsistent, rapidly evaporating 98 Octane pump fuel.
