Default Is Melbourne the home of the worst drivers in the world?

Having just flown back from the FPV open day, which was lots of fun, I have determined that Melbourne is the home for some of the worst drivers in the world.

U turns in the middle of traffic, high speed lane changes without any indication or awareness of other vehicles, pull out from parks with no regard to oncoming traffic, stopping in the middle of the road for no reason, failure to understand what the STOP in the middle of the big red octagonal sign means, failure to give way.....

It goes on and on....

I have driven in all Australian cities and even in such crazy places as LA, Montreal, Toronto, New Orleans (and about 20 or 30 other US cities), HongKong, most of NZ, Tahiti and melbourne wins hands down.

Now I understand why Bracks has more speed, I mean safety, cameras than traffic lights. You are all maniacs........

I picked the 3rd yes working on the theory the lower in the list more strongly you agree.

We moved here (not for the traffic.... lol), and I would rather sydney traffic any day, I prefer organised choas to the anarchy in melbourne

amen.... i've been saying this for a while. Melbourne car owners cannot drive.

I have also driven in LA, San Diego, San Franciso and Denver as well as all over Australia. Melbourne drivers are impatient, unco-ordinated, underdeveloped and just plain incompetent.

I don't know if you guys down for the weekend got to hear some of our TAC ads on the radio, but the biggest problem is the constant beating of "if you don't speed your fine, if you do speed your a criminal" into the masses by the government.

Now all people do is watch their speedo and think their immune from everything because they're not speeding. There's no effort made to actually lift people's driving skills either, no money in that.

Its only going to get worse.

Yep, actually have driven in Perth a lot, no real problem as long as you drive expecting others to have a 30 second reaction time to any event.

For me I have found NSW to be just as bad...but I agree Melbourne drivers are frustrating, arrogant and have no respect for others. Driving over 600km a week you tend to see it quite a lot!
I spent most of my time in a purple ute, all I remember is an induction noise like cyclone tracey and blacking out due to excess G-forces.

been there many times in the last few years and the traffic going in and out of 17th street shopping centre, supercheap auto and such can be deadly
Still better than melbourne

Did any of you who went to FPV see the four car crash on saturday at 5pm
One was a VN-VR commodore and two of them had no front end
Mate Jason from Falcon club of SA and I were coming back from car bra and herrod's on our way to his uncle's at thornbury, just down the road from St George motor inn where the NSW guys were (great cars btw) staying

alot of the drivers in melbourne have no respect for other motorists, and most of these are bombadore drivers. Also its seems everytime a crapadore driver sees a ford they just have do something stupid and dangerous

As much as I hate stereotypes, I would have to agree with this observation from my own experience.

At least some of us Melbournites can drive, sadly we seem to be the minority. :(

I've not voted as I don't agree. By Australian standards the Vics are well ahead of the Queenslanders (who appear to be asleep mostly); the New South Welsh (who appear to not know what lane markings are for) and the South Australians (who drive like the rest of the State works - slowly).

In International terms we are also streets ahead of (1) The Taiwanese (who could teach Stryder a thing or two about multiple lane changes); (2) The Chinese (just plain scary) and (3) Any Middle Eastern Country.

Cheers
Russ

i reckon they are because my car has more scratches on it nowthen it did when i lived in queensland. The shopping centres would have to be the worst. Thats where all of them are from. maybe they should do compulsory learning to park in a shopping centre car park.

Melbourne drivers are bad for sure.
Qld drives are fine till it rains.. then they go mental and try to kill themselves and anyone else.

By far the worst, without doubt, is SA. Quite simply, they should be banned form haveing cars. Completely insane, dangerous and basically mental.

I would have to say Rockhampton is worse, I remember a few years ago the accident to people ratio here was the highest in Australia. I can't remember where I saw it but I think it was in an old Wheels magazine. I was so freaked out by some people here I bought a old pulsar to get me around so my pride and joy can stay safe.

I also dont believe that Melbourne drivers are the worst, but maybe some elements such as Asians could learne to drive better.
Internationally i've heard that the Italians are some of the worst drivers in the world.
Cheers John

When ever I see somebody doing a u-turn at lights I always look back to check their rego plates and 90% of the time they are from Victoria.

anyone else noticed that? I know that an interstate driver has a better chance of being lost hence doing a u-turn, but they nearly always are victorian cars.

Never driven in Melbourne, so I chose the 4th choice.
As for Adelaide drivers, the best (worst) thing you see here is the shinanigans at merging lanes. It's a fight to the death.

I didn't vote either, I don't think we Melbournites are the worst drivers around, I've been to a fair few countries and seen some damn scary things.

Now London actually the whole of England, that is one scary place, those black cabs, get in, hold on and shut your eyes.

No wonder there are hardly any Escorts left over there.

I'll admit though, driving into the city once I gave a rather wide berth to an asian, wearing a hat and driving a Volvo! :
