Yeah 16 years old now 220,000kms had it for 11 years, no complaints
we will be spending the same money for the BMW as we did back then for the Prado

I don't know - I love their look and all but hate the servicing high costs and what IF it ends up being a problem child ? 93k's is early days but look ahead 10yrs being you had the Prado 11.

Yeah I would be looking at another Prado. I know they hold their value but I have been surprised by the economy of ours.

What are your min specs? Both the Prado and PJ Sport have benefits, but the Prado is just more solid.

Although it must be said the tech in the Prado we have is shyte, my AU2 fairmont from 10 years ago seems to have more electronic gizmo's.

We'd have to shop for a Kakadu to get anywhere near the spec which would cost around 15K more anyway.

But really Prado has nothing on the Luxuries, power & handling of the BMW. its not for us anymore

Any warranty left on the BMW, as with most euro's the price drops on secondhand when they are just out of warranty...

I'm so tempted by a Range Rover that has had a $10k price drop in the last week.....4 years old and under 40K km...

As to the BMW X5, you won't get Prado reliability however it will be sooo much nicer to drive...almost as nice as your Territory

No its expired, which is why its falls into our price range, the dealer will give me 12 months warranty though, which I'm happy about

I find most expensive cars drop heavily when the warranty expires, maybe Toyota's are an exception

1st gen X5's id say the Territory drives better.. but they progressed, we can lament what the territory could have become

The best advice here is to not buy another prado.

In regards to the BMW, do some googling, see if you can find some “buying used” reports to find some common weak points to keep an eye out for.

Being euro, ensure it has a full service history, could be worth contacting the BMW dealer or mechanic it was serviced at, see if you can get more details or a warranty claim history.

Tyres and brakes being consumables are expensive (because bmw and because big car), so make sure they are all in good shape. A paid inspection at a BMW dealer or reputable mechanic may also be worth doing.

Agree with that. Seems to be how BMW service departments make money.
Servicing cost is high also. You can get quality brake parts online for a 1/4 of the BMW prices.
Run-flat tyres are not cheap either, but you should be able to shop around at tyre shops rather than from the dealer.

There are many good independent mechanics that can service Euro brands. The cost may be a little less than dealer, but some of them are not 'low cost'.

Wife has a 2016 X1 diesel 2wd, and the servicing cost of that seems to be about $700 per visit to the alternative workshops, and that's after I have done DIY brake parts and tyres, (Otherwise it would have been more in the range of $2K++ per visit).
The X5 with bigger tyres and brakes obviously higher.

Cheers,

I'd give a BMW specialist a call and ask for some advice. If it's through a dealer see if they can give extended factory warranty? Also ask if the car has any factory warranty left.

190kw and 560Nm seems like way too much for an adult.

Not my personal opinion. I think the 6 cylinder diesel is a nice engine for a big SUV. BMW is one of the best German cars IMO

Just do your research.

My brother had the 2018 or 2019 model and it was constantly in and out of the dealership.

I think it was the M model - not sure if it is the same engine but it was diesel.

A few months ago he traded it for a new Volvo.

I would hate to know what these things cost to fix out of warranty.

Not my call. They are both nice cars but the depreciation hit for the Beema was massive from the figures I heard.

Start with $10-15k gearbox prelacements for XC90's
Stooopid mate of mine bought one from a one owner just out of WTY business associate he knew.

Had a volvo a few years back - total disaster - purchased it new - not a single day of ownership where something didn't break. Spent a lot of time on a tow truck and at the dealer.

Lets just say the "second" volvo i got - was even worse.

Mate just got rid of his 18 month old xc 90 - no better either.

I've had my 530d since Dec. So far - so good. I also have a year old 200 series Sahara.

The tech in the BMW puts the Toyota to shame...... Compared to your Prado the BMW will be amazing to drive....

If you are into badge snobbery go for the BMW,if you want something reliable and reasonably economical stick with a Prado

I don't think its about badge snobbery.......

The BMW is light years ahead of the Toyota when it comes to comfort, handling, technology and performance.... sure the BMW may or may not be as reliable as the toyota, but i'm sure OP is not making his decision based on a badge!!!.....

What a ridiculous comment. It’s been stated what he wants and why he wants it. The prado ticks none of those boxes. They are boring and sloppy.

My comment is no more ridiculous than yours. He asked a question about our thoughts on the BMW.My opinion is that BMWs are among the most unreliable and expensive to maintain vehicles out there.Sure they may drive very well but that is not much value if the damn thing won’t start or decides to stop part way into a trip, then costs 5k to get it fixed.Someone said ONLY $700 for a service, geez I can get a non Euro serviced for $2-300

Well actually you said if Bevsta is into badge snobbery go for the BMW. So pretty ridiculous.

Forgot to mention the economy. The BMW will drink way less than the Prado and have a heap more power in reserve. A Prado may be reliable (pre DPF). But they are slow and sloppy to drive which Bevsta obviously wants to move on from. If he is happy to spend more on maintenance to keep that BMW happy and reliable (which they are capable of being believe it or not) then he is definitely not a snob for buying one as you made out. Get what makes you happy. Not everyone wants boring.

Yep. My dad had a Prado a few years ago and holy hell they are an absolute boat on the road. Bloody average to drive. An X5 would be light years ahead. And you don't get stuck with diesel engine tech that is a few generations behind like you do with a Toyota diesel.

You might need a reality check, click the link below.
https://www.ford.com.au/owners/service/calculator/

for example Ford can charge $975 for a 90,000kms service on a Territory..

I wasn’t referring to special servces, only regular 10-15k services. Have heard of 100,000 services costing a lot more than $975 if the vehicle needs brake discs and wheel alignment, timing belt etc.A regular servce on my wifes I30 diesel is around $160-180, but if she were silly enough to take it to the rip off dealer the cost would be over$300 for exactly the same job, still a long way off the prices others are quoting.
