"THE Holden Commodore has fallen to number 23 on the list of Australia’s best-selling passenger cars in May as the brand struggles to find solid ground in the wake of its exit from Australian manufacturing.
But that number is still fluffed up by sales of remaining locally built stock. Subtract the 157 VFII Commodore sales from the mix, and Holden moved only 883 of the new, fully imported ZB model, which would have dropped it another three rungs on the bestsellers’ list. "Year to date, Commodore sales are down more than 50 percent on the same five-month period last year at 4225, preliminary data shows. Of those, only 2204 are of the new Opel Insignia-based ZB -- meaning Holden has sold fewer of its new Commodores this year than Ford has sold Mustangs (2285)." Read next: April new car sales: Holden feels a different type of pain Holden, meanwhile, had another month of struggles in the showroom during May, falling to number eight on the charts after managing just 5129 sales for the month. Only the Spark (123) and Barina (284) managed to build on May last year’s numbers -- by a combined 12 sales -- with the new Equinox (428) finally shuffling ahead of its replacement, the Captiva (370). Overall, new-car sales tapped the brakes firmly in May, falling to just 100,754 for the month, a 2.1 percent contraction compared with the same month last year. It leaves the market exactly the same margin -- 2.1 percent -- ahead of the first five months of last year." Top 20. Mustangs are everywhere. I see more of them than I do ZB and FG-Xs.
Good move by Ford.

Of course it did. ZB probably only sold half a dozen.

The Equinox would be the big worry for Holden. They were talking it up as being a potential no 1 seller in it's segment, which would mean over 2000 sales a month, they spent a bomb advertising it, yet it has massively failed.
Probably about a quarter of the sales they hoped for. Would love to know how many ZB's were dealer demos registered to make it look like it isn't tanking so bad. |

Ford have nothing in the top 20 for passenger car segment, yet still manage 5th spot for brands..
Everest & Escape are next after Ranger, is Fiesta, Focus & Mondeo really on the nose?

ford doesn't have anything to compete with Commodore(large car), though there can be much in size between the ZB & the Mondeo I note Kia Stinger sales arnt that great

I think it's more about Holden having more passenger cars to sell. They have Spark etc where Ford doesn't have an alternative. And they are letting the Fiesta wither on the vine before the new one arrives only available as an ST version, and nothing else. Focus is old and a year away from replacement. Mondeo does ok, it's just in a dead segment that is going backwards rapidly. Medium under 60k is the quickest shrinking segment, especially now the Camry is imported. Mondeo is the car that competes with ZB. Both medium size, although Holden still try to call the ZB a large car And yes stinger is only selling like 200-300 a month. It will never be as popular as people think it should be. I know they are supply limited but the novelty will quickly wear off them imo. No ones really wanting large sedans anymore. Ford are focusing on SUV's and utes now. That's where the market is going. SUV's continue to increase their lead over passenger car sales every month. |

ba bow. while people like to believe there is reasonable demand for performance still, there is still a reasonable amount of badge snobbery also, and just because AMG sales are high, doesn't mean a KIA will sell well. |

https://www.caradvice.com.au/641248/...-discontinued/ On Friday I spotted an ad in the paper for "Demo" (ie registered phantom sales) 2017 Holden Astra's with auto for $14,990 drive away. Now that is how desperate Holden dealer are at the moment.

There's no doubt that Commodore sales have fallen off a cliff. Holden must have zbs stacked in every corner.
But the question that strikes me is this: where would the Falcon be on the same list? Position 10, 20 or lower still? Although I confess to like seeing all these mustangs around. Theres a lot of smaller cars and compact to midsize suvs on the list. Interesting how our market has changed. Our work fleet is much more diverse these days.

They are an extremely rare sight, I was expecting it to 204 sold in total. VF series 2 are still the most common Holden on the street, followed by the Colorado Ute. A little bit of a pity to see the lame lion in free fall, for decades it has been untouchable

Each dealer would probably have 3-5(or more) in their yard.

A trick car dealers are using more and more these days, is ordering a new car from the manufacturer, immediately registering it as a demo, and then claiming the demontrator allowance rebate back from the manufactuer, which then allows them to sell the cars with only a few kilometres on them at lower prices. Many of these registered "demonstrators" are not used for taking prospective buyers for test drives either, so are as good as a new car with only maybe 50Kms on them. |

I don't know how they get around whatever regulations are in place. Mine was registered the day before they advertised it as a demo but I received all the new car stuff inc a letter from the CEO and a bunch of freebies (family portrait appointment, theatre tickets, leather, embossed, document pouch, logo'd key ring, plus other stuff I can't rem). I'm not complaining as it was discounted thousands from new price but it has to be a rort.
