Has anyone here found a reasonably priced way to get parcels sent from the US to Australia?
I'm looking at getting a couple of things while I'm over in the US, but shipping costs seem prohibitive

Do they actually 'ship' stuff, as in on a boat? That's generally 1/3 to 1/4 the price of economy air.
What are these items? If you are flying you should have a generous baggage allowance? Perhaps with some creative packing you can bring it back with you?

Yeah I've heard of people either bring another suitcase or buy a cheapy and just pay excess baggage if they have too. Obviously what's in it has to be cheaper than any shipping costs to make it worth your while.

I can only remember one, Comgateway, but you can find heaps of them if you google it (i think my AMex card gets me a discount with them). There is one service that seems to be run by a stay at home mum from her garage. She is not the cheapest but more personal service and might make a better effort in some circumstances. USA Post office also has a fixed price Flat Rate box similar to what we have, but it just depends on what you are sending. My research indicates that it costs about the same to send similar things from AU to US, so they are not relatively expensive.

Do it all the time.
USPS - United States Postal Service. Cheap and fast. Have received items from the US faster that items posted within Australia. Above USPS is DHL and the Japanese Postal Service. Both are the big guns of international postage. DHL's premium services are unbelievably fast but it costs. Disclaimer: These recommendations are based on my own experiences and I take no responsibility whatsoever for the performance of any of the couriers or postal services listed. Any company can lose a consignment so choose carefully because you will wear the risk of lost or damaged goods. |
