Default New Speed Camera Setups in Sydney

On my way to work i have noticed they been putting up new speed camera's in the school zones on the side of the road facing against the flow of traffic?? Can they still get you like that as i thought they had to be aimed with the flow of the traffic so the flash doesnt blind you head on if/when it goes off???

For example the one on Hume Hwy Bansktown before the rookwood road turnoff going city direction, theres a speed camera on the left handside facing against the traffic. I cant work out how it could get you without the flash going off esp at 6am when its still pretty dark...unless its meant for cars going the opposite direction.

I always thought fixed speed cameras could only get ppl going the direction they're facing???

Regards
Jamie

Some of them can get either way depending on the set up. Been like that for a while.

They are slowly changing a lot of these cameras on main roads/highways to get you both ways. If you look closely there are sensor pads being placed under the road on both sides to allow the old cameras to pick up both ways.

And there is also a new one set up at beverly hills along king georges road, North of the stony creek road intersection, outside the cinema.

Oh and does anyone know if there is actually a camera eastbound on henry lawson drive just before belmore road, across the road from the school? I can see the westbound one but cant find the eastbound one for the life of me even though there are signs for one. I dont think the westbound one can get you going east, as there is a fence in the way.

There are two in Beverly Hills. One in each direction. They'll make a few bucks during school times.

You'll probably never see them flash, they are most likely an infared system.

They'll be the new IR cameras. No flash, no blinding, no money in your wallet. Cameras facing you have been around for awhile now. The ones on the other side of Mt Ousley in Wollongong have been there for years.

The camera on Henry Lawson Drive on top of the hill at Picnic Point has been there for years catching city bound traffic, until recently when it has been converted and picking up west bound as well. Have the piece of paper to prove it................... :

Tell me about it. The TOM TOM Sat Nav tells you when they are coming up. It seems to warn me so regularly that I can't think about anything else. Not that I ever speed.

If you venture on the Pacific and New England Highways, you will find that most if not all will take piccies traffic in both directions.

Well not only have they installed fixed speed cameras on king georges road as mentioned but also up at penshurst on forest road, right next to the school and also at hurstville on forest rd, right next to where KFC used to be.

The forest road near old kfc was put in place to stop people flooring it to catch the green arrow into park road.

I have noticed the kingsway in mirander got a new one too.

GT your having a lend mate, cruise control is that cruise control for the open road, using it in and around city driving would drive you mad in minutes, speed changes every few k's on and off the brakes avoiding those lovelly camry drivers, you really cant tell you have mastered driving in the city with CC, if you have we all need your secret.

Its bad enough on fwys sometimes anyways, and you still gota watch the speed rolling down hill. But it does help on long road trips.

Use President Avenue to Sylvania Road, follow that to the Kingsway, turn left onto the Kingsway. You miss them both! Just make sure you are doing the limit over the sensor lines (and in a BA/BF/SX/SY, the indicated speed is 5 Kms over anyway) and you'll be fine.

Does anybody know if the Camera outside of the Wollongong University catches cars both ways? I'm down there a bit for work, and don't always drive slow through there.

The uni one from what I can tell its only Northbound. The one around the Fairy Meadow intersection does the Southbound. When heading north from before the uni turnoff I keep the cruise control on until after the Fairy Meadow intersection then boot it up Mt Ousley

Nope, that one only catches soutbound traffic. The concrete divider in the middle prevents coverage of the other side.

There is one in Bulli, Princess Hwy just before the Park Road traffic lights. (southbound towards Wollongong). The grids are in the southbound lanes. However last year they were testing it via northbound lane triggering (ie across lanes into oncoming traffic). I know this because I triggered the flash on the way to a club meeting. I turned back and asked them what was going on, and they confirmed opposite side of road activation.
There are markes in the road suggesting loops, but have not heard of anyone getting done that way yet.

i second that...imagine how quickly the buttons for reset cruise and + - will wear out within a few weeks...

i cant believe how many camera's are going up...everybody just gonna have to be really alert...what the govt doesnt understand is that it will slow down ppl for that 50m then they are up speeding again...

If it's bumper to bumper then there's no real fear of accidently breaking the speed limit. I use cruise control quite a lot driving around Sydney once I'm out of the middle of the city. Having to do quite a bit of driving all over Sydney, cruise control has been great.

Ford recently did a reco on my handbrake and when the car warmed up the handbrake light would come on and disengage cruise control. Cruise control has almost become second nature to use and I realised how much I actually did use it when I couldn't.

Same ... I use cruise all of the time around Sydney ... once you get used to it. Even in light traffic I use it ... it is easy to get used to.

My wife hates using it altogether ... but since I got it in both my vehicles now ... It's an option I will make sure I have from now on.

hey DOC. i drive 65kms each way to work . i go on 3 motorways, which have speed cameras. its a boring drive . and without cruise control it's very easy to kreep 10 to 20km over the limit.
of course there are speed changes on all the motorways, so you still have to concentrate on when to change the speed.
the only time i DO NOT USE IT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE IS AFTER M/N SHIFT.
you actually notice speed and inertia changes when your having a microsleep, i think so anyway. cruise control will breed complacancy when tired .
