Man, does anyone know why there has been a sudden increase in the number of ID tags for sale on eBay? I've never seen this in the last year, but in the last two weeks there have been heaps - about 10 listings - of Torana and monaro ID tags. No GT ones that I've seen, but a random spike of Holden ones all of a sudden.
Has a law changed and people are trying to offload them? I'm stumped. |

Never noticed - but then again, im not actively looking for tags.
Dont see why its illegal to sell them, its only illegal to use them. |

It is illegal to sell ID plates seperate from the relivant chassis - if you see a listing, report it to the ebay overlords so it can be pulled.
I personally can not see any legitimate reason to sell ID plates seperate from the chassis. Before anyone gets bent out of shape about having the right to sell what ever they have to hand - this is how someones' pride and joy gets rebirthed. Many of us have spent far too many years and dollars to have some low life steal our cars, replate it and sell to some unsupecting punter. |

The more people who report it, the more they may take notice...
For all we know is that these tags belong to someones stolen car...

I don't search for tags, I have saved searches for a number of different cars. They pop up in that feed. It's disturbing because I wonder if they were stolen years ago... scumbags.

The tags won't be stolen, the cars they go on will be, along with a vin/chassis number change. NRMA and other insurers were shaken up a few years ago when new laws were brought in saying written off cars had to have their tags destroyed. knocked the value of their write off auction cars down dramatically. These days you cannot register an insurance write off (statutory) VIN number unless it has been declared an economical repairer. Then it has to be engineered for correct repairs. Literally hundreds of people have been busted rebirthing cars with tags and Vin numbers placed on stolen cars. I was at an NRMA auction looking for a parts car when a group of men purchased a classic Valiant burned to a crisp but with tags intact. $5. I still would like to know what they did with it.

The $5 would be for scrap. All cars in NSW now that are deemed total loss can not be re registered. Last edited by xisled; 16-05-2012 at 08:30 AM. |

I love how he is selling something for $2,000, yet he is selling it because he is building a house. $2,000 must go a long way these days.

does not bother me that people are selling ID plates...who cares
just makes me think how silly it would be to buy the plates and build a car to the specs of that plate... just wouldnt feel legit to me. a GT should only be restored on its original body.
