Since its the holiday season now i'm guessing quite a few are heading out and abroad. Just a bit of a warning for those who might get a tattoo or 2.

I'd say the best precaution would be, don't.
Just enjoy your holiday, and then look at getting it done when you come back home. That would also mean not having to worry about the after care while you're away as well.

Why the hell would anyone get a tattoo done in a country like Bali? I don't know why people even go to Bali but that's another story. This guy paid the ultimate price for stupidity.

It's a risk no matter where you go. But the risk may be higher in another part of the world.

I don't agree. Oddly, places like Malaysia often have better health than in Australia in certain conditions. Like any place, it's always advisable to do your homework on a potential medical centre before going ahead with it. Plenty of botched cosmetic surgery from QLD for instance. |

I got one done in Thailand. And I've got to say the place was 5x cleaner than any Australian tattoo joint that I've had stuff done in. The Thai bloke made a point about showing me all his needles still in in opened packets and that his gun in the sterilizer before I even had a chance to ask to see it.

not very much info in the article?
for aruments sake the infection could have been spread a number of ways, with the tattoo being the least embarrassing thing to blame it on......... |

That US site is bad but there's a place that's in aus, called Black Rose Ink tattoo in NT...they're a bunch of kids and they don't mind tattooing underage people. And they're TERRIBLE! much worse than the US mob linked above.

Regular WA Health Dept warning at this time of year. There are many Aussie run tattoo business in Bali and many have autoclaves to sterilise, something a lot of shops in Oz don't, many still use only alcohol based sterilants. Like any tattoo joint, check the work and speak to people. A mate in the Army got hepatitis from a tattoo done in Adelaide.
Any body art or piercing place can pass on blood borne diseases. Have a look at the number of parlours closed in Australia on 2010/2011 about twenty due to blood borne infections. |

Perhaps there may be more to this story than the "victim" is letting on. But hey, how else could you catch aids in bali, right?

There's a reason the Jetstar flights to Kuta are called the Bogan Bus.

It always pays to check out the Tattoo parlour to ascertain whether they use fresh sealed needles for each customer rather than the old method of sterilising used equipment in an autoclave I have had 4 Tattoos done in Bali and always been shown the needles in sealed packets before commencing to have the tattoo done the same applies for the little containers that the ink is placed in as well , also it pays to ascertain if the tattooist you are going to has a good reputation as is the case of the one i use around the corner from the Bali Bagus Pub in Poppies 2 a fella by the name of Agus Tyas who has worked not just in Bali but internationally as well ! and he has a rule that no alcohol be consumed on his premises and also advises that customers dont drink before having their tatto done as alcohol and the humid heat dont really mix and can cause excessive sweating which leads to bleeding from the freshly done tattoo , One big no no is using a tatto artist who will come to your hotel and do the work as they tend to not be as scrupulous on the hygiene side of things .
