Pretty simple one. What's the answer?

Well it might be if there was an actual sign between the brackets and the 2

assuming it is implying multiplication then 48 / 2 * (9 + 3) = 48 / 2 * 12 = 24 * 12 = 288.

LOL oh ****...bodmas.....division first....

I read it as 44 / (2*(9+3)) = 44 / 2*27 = 44 / 54 = 0.8

Order of operations
Brackets first, then do the multiply between 2 and 9, no sign is always multiply.
Then 48/24=2

edit: can I just ask, howcome?

Because on another forum I visit this simple maths question has started WW3

I think it must be 288 but an army of self proclaimed "clever people" say it has to be 2. At the moment a poll is sitting at 53% for 288.

Jesus...two mistake in my haste

48 not 44 and + not x

so...

48 / 2(9+3) = 48 / 2(12) = 48 / 24 = 2

Thats my final answer. Lock it in eddie...

48 / 2(9+3)
= 48/2(12)
= 48/24
= 2

EDIT: But if you work left-to-right after the bracket, you get 288!

48 / 2(9+3)
= 48 / 2 (12)
= 24 (12)
= 288

48÷2(9+3)
48÷2x(9+3)
48÷2x12
24x12
288

If you come to any other answer, go back to school.

All of you answering 2, the question is 48÷2x(9+3)

If it was 48÷(2x(9+3)) you would be right

Or cant type?

12x12 = 144...you mean 24x12

True M and D can be used at the same time....but I didnt do left to right.

edit: lots of edits from me, but I would have nailed that elephant question

I conceded, I was wrong, and it is 288. Dammit

Now I'm wondering if I should go back to school .....

Okay smart people, where's the error in this one (and I know it this time) :

2 =1 !!!!!

Given that a=b :

a=b
a² = ab (multiply both sides by a)
a² - b² = ab - b² ( subtract b² from both sides)
(a-b)(a+b) = b(a-b) (factorise)
a+b = b (divide both sides by a-b)
b+b = b (as a=b)
2b = b
2 = 1

Curses ! Foiled again !

The error is -

a + b = b (divide both sides by (a - b))

If a = b as stated, then a - b = 0. You can't divide by zero....

It all starts here :
a²- b² = ab - b² (subtract b squared from both sides)

where you have effectively made the equation 0 = 0...

yeah that looks suspiciously like an equation my teacher used to bamboozle us.
