Default Simmons return !

Well, there have been many rumours, innuendo and all the rest but I have just had a good look over the 'new' Simmons wheels out and must say they do look the goods. Before this becomes a slugfest over not being originals and they are being being built in China by so and so, let me say, fom an aesthetic and visual point of view, they are stunning, they seem to be very well made and finished as good as, if not better, than the originals so time will tell if they are built nd engineered as per the previous generation - which I'm told they are. Anyway, enjoy the pics - this is the very first production set in 20 inch - yep, FR20s now, FR22s are also available to order as are the 19s.

I would love a set for mine.
Not that I would be able to afford them for a hundred years but - do they make them in 17"?

Actually they are a licenced Simmons product - now under new ownership.
They carry the simmons face stamp to the rear and serial coding also, as someone has mentioned, construction has now changed - it would seem for the better, time will tell.
I've had a good look right over them and can honestly say they are impressive, I've had 7 sets of simmons on various cars over the years and these seem to be made just as well, finish is very tidy, they do seem lighter to pickup - maybe that was the weetbix I ate that day but I'll try to get some weights to compare to the originals. The only marked difference I could pick is the frog (scoop) to the back of each fork - possibly where some of the weight saving comes from. Its not huge and I wouldn't call them hollow but similar to a brick, they have been designed with this feature. The nuts to the inner dish did look a little cheap imo but u only see them when the wheels are off. Dishes were better than the originals. Text on the caps was micro-mm different - again thats just my opinion and to the average joe, u wouldn't pick it.

To try answer everyone's questions:

285s - yes, guards have 'massaged', do a search on yloooz and u will see more specs/pix on the car. This particular car started with FR18, then 19s and now the 20s. Many mag features over the years but none as it stands now.

the ebay rims mentioned are quite different, the closest style out there is an american rim that goes by the name of Kinesis.

There is another group in WA that are working on the older smaller styles - B45 / V5s, don't know much about them myself but I understand 16s will be the biggest they go.

ATM my understanding is the FRs will be done as 19s and 20s + 22s as that is the demand for them, 18s if they get enough interest. The ride difference from the 19s to the 20s is un-noticeable, we drove it back to back and couldn't pick the difference. I have the 19s on my EB XR8 and 17s on the EB GHIA and have to say the 19s are WAY more comfortable even if the car sits 2 inches lower. The good tyres and koni's over the pedders in the Ghia probably make the biggest difference.

They are still 3 piece so if they unfortunate happens, parts are interchangeable.

I haven't seen the colour charts yet, I'm assuming they will still be available in the standard range.

Prices aren't cheap, but Simmons never were. They are 'more affordable' than the so called originals but it comes down to the quality of tyre u fit, 19s - 20s with top rubber will see u in the $4-5k zone from what I have seen. Obviously supply and demand and the aussie $ will move things around a bit but they are not the entry level chromies u find on ebay etc.

Thanks Scotty, Canberra is good, hope u are keeping your feet dry up in Qld.

Hope that answers everyone's questions - and no, I'm not an agent

Are they going to do them in proper sizes such as 18s? Or just the too big so make my car ride like crap and cost a fortune for inferior tyres sizes?

Call these guys up. Not cheap, but definitely worth it.
They are a forged centre now as well, they were cast before.

The "old" Simmons were cast and machined in China, then put together in Sydney. The "new" Simmons are cast and machined in China and then put together in Sydney. Most people didn't know, or didn't want to believe the old Simmons' connection with China. It was not publicised. If anything, going on reports from people who have dealt with the new Simmons wheels (not personal experience), the outers and inners are better and stronger quality, where as the old Simmons were known to buckle when hitting potholes, or apexes on a track. Time will tell I guess.

All true, at one stage the barrels where made in Australia, but in the end they were all made in China. I would be keen to see how strong these rims are (more and more important as the size increases and sidewalls shrink). Will be interesting to see how these go.
