Toyota pulls 'incestuous, degrading' ad
By Inga Gilchrist December 14, 2009 01:53pm CAR giant Toyota has pulled an advertisement slammed as incestuous, degrading and sexist. The winning entry in the Toyota-sponsored Clever Film Comp has been yanked from the event site after an online backlash against sexual jokes including a father saying his daughter "can take a good pounding". Dubbed "abuser-generated content", the Toyota Yaris clip features a young woman's boyfriend and father sharing innuendo about her losing her virginity with promises to "have her on her back" and being "ready to blow". The video Clean Getaways won $7000 and judges' praise last week. "The top 10 entries were all great fun to watch," the judges said on the competition's Facebook site. Facebook member Miranda Staton said the clip was "very offensive and incredibly degrading to women". Viewer Amanda McK posted that the "matey" agreement between father and boyfriend "has incestuous overtones". Advertising commentator Philip O'Neill blogged that "given the bizarre incestuous overtones" it was "abuser-generated content". But John Davis was a lone supporter. "I can't help but notice it's only women who are complaining here, nag nag nag," he wrote. Toyota Australia direct marketing and social media manager Todd Connolly told media site Mumbrella: "We wouldn't distance ourselves from it by any means."

Yep, I'm an am old git. And I aint no flat soled shoe wearing tree hugging libbo, it's just poorly done.
Didn't even make me smile. The border protection ad on the other hand, absolutely awsome, funny, well done, perfectly executed humour.

When you look at the kind of market that the Yaris seems to get (young women) I don't get why they didn't take it from a female perspective. The thing about comedy is that it's only funny coming from the person usually in less power. It would have been much better if a girl was used and she was the dirty one, then the young date was scared of her, but a cougar mum was doing the warnings etc. |

While it is funny - it is not hard to see why Toyota wouldn't want to use it in an advertising campaign for the masses.

I don't know what to think when I saw the ad... I was kind of wrong.
The boy's car is a Toyota Yarris? That's what I thought was wrong. |

Saw the ad, didn't smile, but I did cringe.
Not funny, not clever, just lewd. A big yay for society for again showing how peoples most baser emotions are promoted as the norm. Now lets all celebrate with a road trip to the sewerage works.

Tacky and most of all, immature. I didn't find it offensive, just not funny. It wasn't clever and it appeared as though it tried way too hard. It could have been pulled off (no pun intended) a whole lot better if it was a little more subtle.

Reminded me of the smutty talkfest stuff FM stations broadcast to their adoring fans in the evenings. Milk, milk, lemonade and out the back....... is funiier. Degrading to men folk, more than the women IMO. |
