got cousins who live up there....its a beautiful place, thats for sure..however living there is another story...lifestyle is really hectic and the cost of living is high....if you were making 100g a year then it may be easy street for ya..however i have heard that things have changed quite abit, due to the country's financial problem...house prices have plummeted...
would i live there? yes, if i had a high paying job.... |

Yeah I went there in 2005...it's a pretty cool town, poles apart from a place like say, New York. Has the usual vices and problems like you would have in any big city (particularly in America). Great summer lifestyle and the Marina District down near the Golden Gate Bridge is way cool.
Would I live there? Possibly. It would be something I'd have to consider and investigate very carefully before committing though. Having uprooted my life from one country to another before it is something that you'd want to be doing only if the right opportunity presents itself. |

I was there last year as a tourist and loved the place, really nice clean city and the food and people are awesome.
If I were to move there I'd like to check out the suburbs more, from what I could gather SF's major industry is banking and the finicial sector originating from the gold rush days, so I guess if you work in this industry it would be a sweet place to live |

Been there a few times now as a tourist. Love the city, it's fantastic. Dunno about living there, but I dare say it would be good for a while.
There would be plenty to do around there. Two great wine regions nearby in Sonoma and Napa Valleys. I can give you some info on the Sonoma Valley as I lived there for three months, but only stayed in a hotel in San Fran. Lots of places within driving distance. Reno, Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, Vegas, LA, Sacremento, etc, etc. Plenty to see down the coast along highway 1 as well.

You lucky dog living in Sonoma for 3 months, what a beautiful place. I don't know about living in Sanfran (or any city) but I'd live in Sonoma. We "did" the Nappa and Sonoma wineries last August and I must say I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of some of their reds |

Sam, let's just hope that your work doesn't get set up in Oakland. A lot of unsavouries there, although I think things did quieten down a bit when Uncle SB went through there. Or did it get worse? I can't remember. Edit: Oh and with the electronics stuff, make sure they have an international voltage adapter otherwise you're buggered when you bring it home and then have to buy a voltage reducer for your gear. There goes your savings! Clothes are really cheap there too. Buy up big when you're there.

Yeah it's a really nice city. Pier 39 and all that touristy area was pretty cool.
A wise word of advice I was given by a local, if you drop a dollar on the street, just let it go man...

It was a bit tongue in cheek, the joke was don't go bending over in the street. There's a large gay community there, in the Castro district or something I believe. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

I went there in February and agree with the above, it's a beautiful place and has very friendly people. It is vastly different to LA and New York. It is probably the one place in the USA I would consider living in. One thing to look out for is the large number of homeless people, there are a number of people begging for money and it appeared to be more common here than any other place I went to.

Lived in Sacramento and spent many times in San Fran, unless you are working directly in San Fran I wouldnt live there, fantastic place, but its a pain on weekends with everyone else coming in, its very similar feel to Melbourne I thought, It can get very cold there even during summer, also car parking if you have one can be as expensive as living there, its a pretty tight little place, but good to base yourself from....

Cheers Craig. This whole "move to US topic' just keeps bouncing like a ball. One minute work is hot to go, one minute they aren't, then I think i have all the details, then I don't. So hopefully this week I will know more as we are narrowing alot of the logisitcs down, so I will take you up on the offer of a phone call.
Cheers. Sam |

No worries mate, let me know if you want a hand with who we moved with, how it went, what we took and didnt take....
Off the top of my head...DONT take anything electrical unless its a laptop you need...or a home PC you must have... They are cheap as chips over there anyway... If the kids need new furniture, buy it over there again its cheap...we basically filled an entire house with new furniture and electrics for around 10k Aussie...which is cheap as..

second what craig is saying about computer gear in the US, its dirt cheap. The only thing I took over with me when I lived there was my hard drive.

the fact i packed the vibrator was hardly surprising, the fact I used the wrong end on you for 45 minutes without you noticing was the surprising part.
