Car Advice are currently doing a real world fuel comparison test between the new SS with AFM and XR8 6A. Performance testing first, they put both on the dyno at Springy Performance.
XR8 235rwkw against 290kw SS 204rwkw against 260kw

Its also interesting to note the fly wheel figures they got, the XR8 had 288 fwkw which isn't too far off the 290fwkw claim from the factory, but the SS came up with only 250fwkw, which is quite a bit less from the claimed 260fwkw

Any real world practical fuel savings the SS gets will be largely as a result of de-tuning power and consumption out of the car..
Unless you travel at a constant speed all day there doesnt seem to be any real gains from AFM. Holden have taken the Auto SS from a high 13 second car and made it a low 14 second car by reducing its power output..

Results just in:
0-100Km/hr: SS-6.71sec, XR8-6.52sec 400M: SS-14.8sec, XR8-14.72sec 100-0Km/hr(braking): SS-32.02M, XR8-31.4M So pretty neck-and-neck with FG XR8 Auto just nudging out the AFM-equipped VE SS. There were more results but it was hard to make out from the crappy audio (mobile phone). After the dyno results this morning I'll take this as a win for Ford :

Chop 1 second off those times for the " extra baggage " etc and you get a glimpse of what these cars are capable of in stock trim ...........not too shabby for "cooking" models. |

The economy results are out tomorrow morning (28th) apparently. Whatever the results, I think the most telling comments by the testers/journalists were about how the SS seemed to drop off in performance run after run while the XR8 only seemed to get better.

Ecconomy is important to most buyers. The guys looking to buy one of these for serious performance duties is well aware of what they can do once the factory detune is swaped out so I don't think it will make any difference to them how slow they are straight out of the shop

Yep... I'm not sure what they have planned for Euro 4, but if it ain't direct injection then they're screwed.

Last time i spoke with someone from HSV about the future he told me they had "no plans what so ever" to increase power outputs on their regular range and holden had a similar position, and they were lucky to get to where they did.. this position was part economic, part "sensibility"...
We all know times change but i think were stuck with current outputs for atleast the next few years in both camps.

It doesn’t surprise me that Holden “Fiddle” with the power figures. They “Fiddle” with their sale figures. Unlike Ford, Holden class sales to their dealers as sales in their sales figures, where as Ford only use sales to actual consumers, and do not include the dealers. Holden=Dodgy, they pull good quality cars from the market and replace them with cheap Korean cars and charge the same price.
^^^^^^^ that above is a quote from a comment on the car advice page . Is that true |

Well, they have just reported their first video part way through the economy run.
Apparently it is mostly uphill from Melbourne to where they are at Urowa? The Falcon is using 'just over 9 litres' per 100km. The C'dore is using 9.6 litres. 'Going on the flats it was working in 4cly mode, but any slight hill and it goes to 8cyls. The technology doesn't really seem to be working'... These figures are using the on-board. Actual fuel filling calculations will be used for the final results! Also of note, was a 'bit of a firm ride' of the SS and getting a bit of a 'stiff back' on these 'crappy roads'. The other tester said the XR8 ride was comfortable!

However insaying this Holden do push dealers to register a large amount of demos, plus holden registers alot of its own cars each month.... Dealers have to register a certain amount of demos!
