That was the first thing that came to my mind, imagine if it was right hand drive or he had a passenger. Remember Lowndes at Bathurst the other year when the tyre landed on his Falcon that was a scary moment just watching, i couldnt imagine what this poor guy was thinking. I seen a 9" when it was being transferred from 1 Falcon to another and when the 31 spline Moser Billet Axels come out to my amazement the wheel studs instead of being new bigger ones to match the billet axels the standard studs had been kept and had been modified by welding & grinding to make them fit. The Falcon was running 11.5 @ 120mph with these home made studs and the price of a set of new studs compared to the money spent on the whole diff, its was probably only a matter of time before they let go. |

Wow....I wonder though if it would have been that bad if the car did not have a sunroof. I imagine that the roof would have held up better.
Food for thought before looking at putting in a sunroof i guess.

I always check my wheel nuts after service.
Both my rears were loose after a service. Didn't find out for 3 days later when I heard a scrapping noise at low speed. In the mean time I had to rush my wife to hospital in an emergency so had the nuts come off we would have both ended up in hospital or the morgue. Just can't trust the mechanics to tighten and torque those nuts. (no offense to the guys that do the right thing) CHECK EM PEOPLE.

I check my wheel nuts every so often but how many 'average' motorists bother to keep an eye on their wheel bearings?

I wonder if it was caused due to the wheel studs shearing off. Stupid huge wheels with enormous moments of inertia...

I drove my car out of my driveway and it felt like the engine was going to fall out stopped it all the wheel nuts loose on the left front but the stud with the locknut had snapped off as I went down the driveway . Someone had tried to steal my wheel lucky the stud snapped off in the driveway and not the motorway or else someone could end up dead

amazing how in so many car accidents the cars are such a mess and so close to killing occupants but they come away basically unscathed.

This F150 rolled in while I was at a dealer in the U.S. A wheel came off an SUV coming in the other direction on the freeway, luckily he was uninjured.

Hmmm - Must be why Ford doesn't have a factory option for a sunroof on the new FGs ...........Does ANCAP do a "flying wheel" test?

How do you check bearings?
And I read all 18 pages in that thread lol. For anyone that couldn't be bothered, hes fine, scratched up arm, no shoulder breakages, car will be sold for parts and hes discussing some sort of compensation with his lawyer, probably in the form of sueing the company, btw those are the single bolt wheels, much like V8 super cars. |

It's funny due to the irony being that many Americans I know consider our requirement of getting cars engineered to be "Communist".
More like "Sensible". |
