Computer help needed.

Ok ive got a mates laptop with Windows 2000 and it wont stay connected to the net for very long. I seem to remember this bug going around a little while back but I wasnt affected so I have no idea how to fix it.
Can somebody please enlighten me?

I cant update to WinXP due to lack of resources and cant format because theres no way I can backup the hdd.

My uncle seems to remember it has something to do with removing java but I have no idea how to do that.

Hi there
One of the possible reasons for this could be the actual phone connection. When I hooked up my dads PC I used a double adaptor on the line coming out of the wall. Everytime the internet connection would start to get a little busy the adapter would shit itself and I'd lose connection. If you have a setup like this try it with just the phone line from pc straight into the wall connection.

Could it be just your internet company? If your using dialup then this would be the first issue id look into. Very unreliable. I used to have dialup and it used to drop out all the time. Thought it was my computer but gave the ISP a ring and they just said they were upgrading the service which turned out to be worse than it was before.

First thing that comes to mind is call waiting is still turned on or the 20 minute kick when idle hasn't been unticked.

Does it just disconnect or disconnects and then shuts down? Because that sounds like a virus.

Nope to all the above... I have an identicle laptop next to it running win98 that stays connected with the same isp/account. And its not the 20min idle disconnect. I remember this virus going around over a year ago ... it disconnected you from the net before you could download the patch. From memory there was another way to fix it.

I *think* I know the virus your talking about, my old boss had it on his PC. It would disconnect whenever you tried to get rid of it, patch it or had zone alarm running. I just cannot remember how I got rid of it at the moment. :(

Yes Jase ..... I remember this one from when I tried XP ...........

It was a virus that microsoft has a fix on its pages ..... sounds like you can connect yourself .... .so do that & go to Microsoft webpages & u will find it .... then d/l to your laptop & use a floppy to put into the other comp .......

Damn if I can remember the name ............. but it wont be hard to find ......... thats how I got that one fixed ...........

The virus that you're thinking of is called the W32.Blaster virus and regurlarly disconnects you from the internet. The removal tool can be found HERE.

if that tool ends up working than you'll also need to install the windows 2000 patch to stop the problem from happening again. You can find the patch for 2000 HERE

Ok this is really ****ing ****ing me off. Ive installed and ran adaware, spybot and registry mechanic and still hasnt fixed the problem. All have been updated versions.
I connect to the net and sometimes I get a popup saying something like "Buffer Overflow.. go to www.wupdate.net to download patch" amongst other similar messages. It then disconnects me... other times i dont even get a popup.. just get disconnected.

How the F**K do I get rid of this shit?

Why not just delete everything & reinstall from scratch....Will end up a quicker & cleaner option then muckin around trying a million & one maybe / whatif type solutions.

make sure you have the latest definition files for your virus scanner and be sure that it's set to scan "compressed exe's"...

This does sound like the blaster worm, but there were many varients of it too, download stinger.exe also, after all this, you must patch the OS.

Im with Wulos.......by far the easiest and most worthwhile option...

regardfing Backup...if you have a CD/DVD burner or can borrow from another laptop, backupp all yor stuff to CD or DVD.

Failing that...partition your hard drive and backup all your files to the new partition then format C: and reinstall ...that way you can reinstall then copy your files back over...

Partition Magic is the best software for this, its very easy to use....it costs though, but if you want a copy of it (for evaluation purposes only)
