The idea for this thread came to mind after a WRX pulled into the car park at work today. It drove along slowly a bit before pulling in and it had one of those massive cannon exhausts droning ever so much, audible from every postcode within a 5 mile radius.
Anyway the girl I was working with said: "That sounds so good, Subaru's are the best and they sound the best." I could not believe that was her idea of the best sounding car, idling along it sounded like a $15/hour charter boat putting towards a jetty. When the engine was given anything more it sounded like a vacuum cleaner sucking out the inside of an oil drum. Then the guy came in and they talked about how amazing attaching an industrial coffee tin to the back of his car sounded. They then went onto say how bad all the V8 Falcon's and Commodore's sounded and how they sound like the engine is falling apart. This guy then said (this is a near perfect quote) "...yeah I'm in love with the sound it makes (his car), it puts Lambo's and Ferrari's to shame. I drive next to them all the time and it sounds sooooo much better..." My jaw hit the floor at that point as they proceeded to nod in agreement. I was literally paralysed by stupidity. All knowledge of car and sound went straight down the flusher. However I could be very wrong, maybe this is the best sounding car now and I'm just completely out of touch. So I'd like everyone to enlighten me and all else as to what you think is the definitive greatest sounding car. Video files and sound clips are encouraged.

The girl should not be associating with an eunuch, she may think all men are the same.....
My opinion it's to hard beat an V8 with a lumpy idle. I'll assume plenty exotics sound great but like many of us here I have no first hand experienced. |

I'd hate to admit it but I love a WRX with a big exhaust. Prefer most V8s but a rex would be a close 2nd. Certainly a mile better than an E series 6 with an exhaust.

I'm not too keen on the sound of newer engines. My favourite are old v8 with lumpy cam that shake the car with the engine
Just ticking over, give it some revs the worlds align and pure noise sex as she gets to 4000rpm and climbing. Although I do prefer newer v8s to newer 6 and 4 bangers exhaust, absolutly hate the tin can noise. |

Not sure about the rex, certainly not the best sounding car in the world though. With a bit exhaust it is sort of ricey, but nice and lumpy at the same time.

+1 for the AMG
What he said, without a doubt the best sounding modern engine and one of my all time favourites. Even my old Holley fed, large exhaust and cammed 350 chev in my HK would be challenged in sound quality by a C63 AMG.

Deep, throaty growl of webers combined with a sweet exhaust note of a Group 4 Ford Escort mk 2 BDA-DBG charging through the special stages - been giving me an all body smile for over 30 years..

+1 The sound of a BDA RS Escort in the forest stages of Rally GB revving their heads off & gravel spitting their way to victory! S2000 spec rally cars at full noise have, for me, brought in a new level of excitement in rallying

There was a Ferrari F430 parked outside the local Pizza store last night.

I'm old school. I just love a high hp camy V8 trying to idle.
Add to that a couple of new school entrants, C63 & New GT , just fantastic. The Rex sounds ok, it has a bit of the boxer beat going on, but I'd bet the Rex lovers like the ones mentioned in the OP aren't familiar with the sound of a 600hp clevo. The drone off a loud 4 or 6 cyl. Urgh.

I always thought AMG also until a Dodge Viper moved into the neighbourhood about 6 months ago and rolls past my house every Sunday morning.
The yanks do it as good as anybody i reckon? |
